MINING ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Est. summer 2025, ongoing
This emerging project involves placing artists on placer mines as artists-in-residence. The most substantial component of this project to date was a ten-day self-guided residency at the K2 Gold Mine on the 60-Mile River. Living and working alongside miners allowed me to observe how land is read and reshaped through hunches, heavy machinery, weather conditions, and waterways. Much of my learning occurred while travelling with miners around their claims, often spending hours driving between cut sites, equipment, and historic features of the landscape.
I asked questions about the fluctuating value of gold, what it means to inherit a mining claim or family land, and how miners understand their responsibility to places that will long outlast a single mining season. Many conversations centred on protecting the history embedded in the land they mine: old cabins, abandoned machinery, and unmarked or informal graves. Miners spoke thoughtfully about stewardship, memory, and the tension between active extraction and the preservation of cultural traces. Through these encounters, I also met field geologists and other individuals who live and work in close proximity to mining culture. I heard stories of miners of previous generations walking into Dawson from remote creeks, working with improvised or now-obsolete machinery, and adapting to harsh conditions with limited resources.
Thank you to the McDougall family and the crew at the K1 mine for being such generous hosts, to Neil, Victoria and family, to Brooke and Hannah and the Klondike Placer Miners' Association and the Yukon Advanced Artist Award for their support of this project.
